Lot 78 – Denton’s Durham Sunderland overstruck halfpenny D&H 10, Rare, Ex-Elks, Spence, Fawcett/Litmann, Lincoln

18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Durham

Durham, Sunderland, Rowland Burdon; DH 10, Denton’s halfpenny struck (over) in copper, 7.85g , 29.54mm. This issue often shows an undertype and, in this instance, a Middlesex 1045a (see next lot). Other examples of the plain edge variety have been seen struck over a Middlesex 363 with likely the known edge varieties also being struck over worded edge host coins. All fascinating. This piece, with undertype clearly visible. Strong example, glossy fields and virtually as struck . Rare.
