Lot 125 – Middlesex Anti-Slavery penny, D&H 235, Rare, double-strike

18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex

Middlesex, Anti-Slavery Series, Issuer Uncertain; DH 235, penny struck in copper or brass, 9.39g , 33.03mm. A very interesting double-struck example. This is revealed if one starts with the head and one begins to notice the ghosting of the strike, rotated out by a few millimetres. It is unclear if this is brass or copper but is struck on a very thin and lightweight planchet. Reverse legends underlined, perhaps by a past proprietor. The first of a few anti-slavery themed pieces found scattered within the sale. Unusual. About fine . Rare.
