Lot 128 – Middlesex Orchard halfpenny D&H 399, double-strike

18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex

Middlesex, Soho, Robert Orchard; DH 399, halfpenny struck in copper, 8.83g , 28.68mm. A fairly understated double-strike. At first glance, one might be forgiven if the break to the left of Orchard’s bust was a further break within the die. However, underneath that uneven line is the faint signature of Jacobs. This confirms a rotation of several degrees before another attempt is made at the strike. Elsewhere, much of the obverse has been left undisturbed. The reverse, again limited impact, but the word HALFPENNY now spelt ENFPENNY. A fun issue, about extremely fine .
