LOT 293 Middlesex Halls Halfpenny DH 313, die-clash with Carmarthen (?)
18th Century Provincial Tokens, Extended Universe, Mistrikes
Middlesex, Thomas Hall; D&H 313 copper halfpenny, 8.62g. On first inspection, one could mistake this as a weak strike with some scratches. Upon study, the softness to the Kangaroo and above is down to whatever may have occurred to the reverse. What transpires is that these marks running vertical down towards 5 o’clock is actually an impression of the inside roof of the Morgan’s Iron Foundry Carmarthen halfpenny. Perplexing is how it got there, and which came first. The host planchet seems like a standard plain edge planchet for the variety. Fascinating conundrum, on what is otherwise a largely problem-free example, with some original colour in the devices. Good very fine.
