Tokens of Wales, Later Nineteenth & Early Twentieth Century
Telephone token , Wales/Bristol, THE WESTERN COUNTIES AND SOUTH WALES TELEPHONE COMPANY LIMITED, both sides the same, un-numbered, Cox 323, hard white metal 39mm, possibly nickel. Very fine, extremely rare.

Note: Cox states that the checks were used from 1887-95 when they were replaced by National telephone Company checks, the company had offices in Cardiff in 1891. The Western Counties and South Wales Telephone Company was formed as a subsidiary of the United Telephone Company on 17 December 1884, with head offices in Bristol. £12 per annum was charged to subscribers for 24-hour access & £10 for limited access. On January 1st 1892 the National Telephone Company bought the 4,027 subscriber lines of the Western Counties and South Wales Telephone Company for £277,607 13s 8d.
