LOT 68 Lancashire Liverpool Copper Halfpenny DH – Unpublished, RRR
18th Century Provincial Tokens, Lancashire
A New Liverpool Variety
The following is a fascinating variety with new obverse, new reverse AND new edge. Who knows where she’s been hiding all this time but provides us enthusiasts with affirmation that there is so much more to be found and understood from this wonderful series
Liverpool, Issuer Uncertain, D&H – Unpublished, halfpenny struck in copper. 9.16g. Notable points of attribution are as follows: Dated 1791 with curved 1’s in the date. Obverse: the wreath to the left extends almost the L. The flag on the main mast extends to the L with the mast to the right positioned directly underneath the L. The bowsprit is underneath the Y with two ropes going directly into the bottom of the Y. Reverse: The wings of the smaller Liver bird just beyond the first limb of the C and the head just left of the centre of Æ. The bulrushes extend to the first limb of the O and level with the first limb of B on the left. The right bulrushes reach almost to the last limb of the A and just beyond the I of OTIA. The edge unseen on any published token in the entire 18th century series: PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE LONDON OR LIVERPOOL. This, very similar to the edge of D&H 89 of PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE LIVERPOOL. One theory could be that both these edges are a concatenation of the standard Liverpool edge and another edge which would end with LONDON OR LIVERPOOL. No trace of any overlapped or overwritten edge on this piece with all words separated out evenly. Exceedingly rare if not unique, fine.
