Middlesex Christ’s Hospital Sixpence DH 2bis, RR

18th Century Provincial Tokens, Middlesex

London, Christ’s Hospital, D&H 2 bis, octagonal sixpence struck in copper, undated. 12.44g. First recorded and plated by Davisson’s 1990 addenda to D&H. A few of these variants have been sold at auction over the past decade or so. The actual Davisson piece sold in Dr Allen Bennett collection in October 2011 (£260) and then again in the Sven Ghalin Collection in December 2018 (£240), being described on both occasions as a restruck variety, rare. Davisson’s own auction in August 2022 ($850) has an example but not described as a restrike but regarded as exceedingly rare. Both of those pieces with small corrosion spots. This example, showing what appears to be typical areas of die rust, thus suggesting a later striking, otherwise problem-free and essentially as made.
