Skidmore’s Berkshire Windsor Halfpenny D&H 1a, Rare
18th Century Provincial Tokens, Berkshire
Windsor, Skidmore, 1795; D&H 1a, struck in copper halfpenny. 10.57g, struck out of collar with edge as SKIDMORE HOLBORN LONDON. Struck from the shattered reverse die, resulting in dramatic flaws throughout. Since the die broke early, most specimens are like this which would also lead to limited number of issues being struck. Obverse particularly well struck, typical die polishing in the fields with hints of original colour. Overall, a very strong example for this type, rather scarce. Extremely fine but mostly as struck.
Provenance: Ex-Patrick Deane Collection, Part II, Baldwin 25.05.2023, lot 566.
