Middlesex Meymott Mule Halfpenny DH 385, ex-Cokayne
18th Century Provincial Tokens, Middlesex
London, Bishopsgate, Meymott & Sons; D&H 385, halfpenny mule struck in copper, 9.46g. We have been rather spoilt with the amount of Meymott varieties on the market in the past decade or so. The amount of fascinating die trials, die states, metals and mules from such a small series is simply wonderful. Hopeful of attaining more varieties at the Deane III sale, many went out of reach from a dealer perspective however this 385 variety was one of the picks of the group. This piece with golden brown fields with underlying brilliance. Very strong centres, a superb example, easy to see why Cokayne would have chosen this for his cabinet. Rare, nearly as struck.
Provenance : Ex-P.C. Deane Collection, part III, lot 1137; F.S. Cokayne Collection, acq. Baldwins 1946.
