Lot 177 – Middlesex Spence halfpenny D&H 795a, die-rotation
Cobwright Collection of Thomas Spence, Part II, Middlesex
Middlesex, Little Turnstile, Thomas Spence; D&H 795a, halfpenny struck in copper. With dies previous, a very different outcome. At first glance, the strike might appear typically flat. The likely culprit is the die-rotation that’s occurred on the reverse, creating a ghosting effect and disrupting the rest of the centres. Otherwise, bold in other parts, brown with faded red surfaces. Technically interesting, extremely fine. Scarce.
