Lot 103 – Skidmore’s Middlesex Hackney Rebello penny D&H 17, Overstruck, Rare
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex
Middlesex, Hackney, David Rebello; D&H 17 – Var, penny struck in copper. The first of the Hackney varieties in this sale, each struck from the same dies. This variety, struck from the dies of the halfpenny (D&H 310) and overstruck on a Somerset D&H 8, remnants of which visible in the fields. This variety appears to be struck on both virgin flans and this Mary Lamb issued host. See Patrick Deane sale, lot 82 for comparison. Smooth patinated surfaces and sharply struck throughout. Fascinating variety, perhaps D&H 17c or bis might be appropriate for future attribution. Extremely fine or better. Very rare.
