Lot 106 – Lutwyche’s Middlesex Sir Jeffery Dunstan penny D&H 26a, overstruck ASYLUM edge
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex
Middlesex, City Road, Thomas Hall; D&H 26a – Var, penny struck in copper. This variety, struck on a broader planchet with edge ON DEMAND WE PROMISE TO PAY ONE PENNY. Underneath this edge, quite clearly in parts, is the edge AN ASYLUM FOR THR OPPRESS’D OF ALL NATIONS and, as such, unpublished. Tiny marks in the fields would suggest wear but close inspection shows this to be likely a very slight double-strike, both sides. See obverse T of T HALL appearing on an angle above the A of HALL. Fascinating example overall and presumably quite rare. About extremely fine. Unpublished, extremely rare thus.
