Lot 112 – Middlesex Charles Fox Penny – Original obverse die, Unique
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex
Middlesex, Political & Social Series, Possibly Thomas Wyon; D&H 221, obverse steel die c.1790’s. One of the highlights of the sale. On offer, possibly a first in modern times, is an original 18th century die. This obverse die belongs to D&H 221 / BHM 325 with issues known to exist in copper, white metal and silver. Some archived auction examples do show the obverse of this variety to have much wear in the strike, consistent one might say with the die state. Metrics are all consistent with known examples of this penny and is offered here for the first time in a numismatic sale. Of the highest rarity. Unique
