Lot 119 – Denton’s Middlesex “Asses Running for” Halfpence D&H 299, Rare
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex
Middlesex, London, Matthew Denton; D&H 299, halfpenny struck in copper. Matthew Denton’s Collector’s issue, satirically aimed at the collectors of coins. Iconic and ironic to say the least. Very strong example, some marginal planchet flaws in the fields but mostly choice surfaces. Sharp strike with early development of obverse die break at the top of D of DEMAND. A literal must for collectors, about as struck (Gem). Very rare.
