Lot 133 – Middlesex Orchard’s halfpenny D&H 399, flip-over double-strike
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex
Middlesex, Soho, Robert Orchard; D&H 399, halfpenny struck in copper. A fun variation on a variety that is always flawed. The die obverse die break appears on all examples but in this instance has been flipped-over and double-struck. This almost entirely obliterates the date and re-writes part of his name. If Orchard himself had previously taken a hatchet to the Sawbridgeworth penny, one can hardly imagine what he might have done with this one. Essentially as made with a generous amount of original colour. Good extremely fine.
