Lot 137 – Middlesex Pidcock’s Mule halfpenny D&H 422bis, RRR+
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex
Middlesex, The Strand, Gilbert Pidcock; D&H 422bis, halfpenny mule struck in copper. Obverse as Middlesex D&H 422 with reverse as Suffolk D&H 18. struck from a very late Pidcock die – perhaps comparable to the D&H 455 issues. Reverse die had already reached terminal state which is why all Suffolk D&H 18’s are RRR. This is struck on a very thin planchet with plain edge. This would account for those softly struck centres, seen on many evasion strikes using end-of-life state dies. A fascinating variety, the second known with the first example being recorded in the McKivor addenda as Middlesex D&H 422bis. Importantly, these are struck not a concoction made of two halves. Very fine and of the highest rarity. Of the highest rarity.
