Lot 201 – Middlesex Spence halfpenny D&H 855, Scarce Guillotine, Gemmy
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Middlesex
Middlesex, Little Turnstile, Thomas Spence; D&H 855, halfpenny struck in copper. Finishing off our Middlesex Spence section, a stark die marriage. It seems the talk of Revolution can bring about the consequences on the reverse! Wonderful obverse cud, cutting through an otherwise perfect prison cell with a blue hued peripheral. Guillotine reverse showing some early buckling of the die, with some light spotting in the fields. Otherwise, a choice example with very strong eye appeal, good extremely fine and retrieved from an NGC 64 holder (accompanied). Scarce.
