Lot 285 – Yorkshire Hull Halfpenny D&H 17, Pattern-like, Gem
18th Century Provincial Tokens of England, Yorkshire
Yorkshire, Hull, Jonathan Garton; D&H 17, halfpenny struck in copper. When we’re all too familiar with a variety and an example comes along which changes your perspective entirely. This was one of those times for the cataloguer. With sharpness normally associated with a pattern or proof-strike, this example has all of those qualities in strike, surfaces and colour. It is our simple conclusion that this piece is merely a very early strike of what is an estimated 5 tons of Garton issues. Scarce die state therefore, not too long after the Yorkshire 16 perhaps. Mint state (Gem).
